Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Spurs extended their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent saves to ensure the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves the manager's team up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and sit half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils duties at each end of the field

Following a drab weekday display in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to score.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his second in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair handled superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have faded somewhat and supporters headed to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a major concern for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of recognised centre-forwards - had netted only a single goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable record on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having space and opportunity to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Spurs penalty area.
