Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that people who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals using these drugs must be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Doctors believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Users who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," described a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural support.
