Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Displacement Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the massive storm caused widespread flash flooding, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the evacuation of millions of residents nationwide.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented rising waters reaching the tops of houses and homes being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. One resident also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

Global warming is causing tropical storms stronger and frequent. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Researchers report that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen doubled in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that severe weather events result in approximately millions in dollars in losses to the country annually.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration last week because of the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from the new storm.
